Canada passport photo (online renewal)

For online passport renewal, Canada accepts a digital photo of at least 1200×1800 pixels in a 2:3 portrait format, with your head taking up 45–50% of the image height, on a plain white or light background, unedited. Printed photos for paper applications still have to come from a commercial photographer, so this tool targets the online renewal file.

Rules change and some countries only accept photos taken by approved photographers or booths. Check your authority’s current requirements before you apply.

FAQ

Can I print this for a paper application?

No. Canada requires printed passport photos to be taken by a commercial photographer with a stamp on the back.

Is background replacement allowed?

Canada asks for unedited photos. For the safest result, take the photo in front of a plain white wall so the background barely changes.
