UK passport photo

HM Passport Office asks for a 35×45 mm photo with your head 29–34 mm from chin to crown, against a plain cream or light grey background, with no shadows, filters or edits. For online applications the digital photo must be at least 600×750 pixels. This tool crops to those rules and exports 600×771 pixels, so the same file works online and in print.

Rules change and some countries only accept photos taken by approved photographers or booths. Check your authority’s current requirements before you apply.

Can I take my own passport photo for a UK passport?

Yes. GOV.UK allows photos taken with your own camera or phone for online applications, as long as they meet the rules. Have someone else take it rather than a selfie at arm’s length.

Why light grey instead of white?

The UK asks for a plain cream or light grey background so the edge of your face stands out; pure white is not listed.
